Why You Should Try Goat Yoga

When I first heard about the Goat Yoga trend I was intrigued mostly because goats have always been my favorite animal! My Grandma gave me a stuffed goat when I was younger and I have loved them ever since. So being able to interact with adorable baby goats and get a work out it a win-win in my book.

What is Goat Yoga?

Goat yoga was started by a farm owner in Oregon who was already organizing a goat happy hour. At happy hour you just spend time with her goats and socialize. The idea to add yoga came about when a yoga instructor asked if she would like to mix in yoga to the happy hour. She was game and thus Goat Yoga as an activity was born. It even has an official name, Caprine Vinyasa Yoga!

Goats are the best animal to help people relieve stress. Why? Well because unlike other animals they don’t need to develop a special bond with you, they just love everyone who gives them attention. They will just come right up to anyone asking to be pet, doesn’t matter if you’re a stranger.

What is a Typical Class Like?

A typical session of baby goat yoga involves lots of light yoga moves for a relaxed beginner level class that welcomes yogis of every skill level. So, don’t worry if you’ve never done yoga before. During the class cute little goats will wander around interacting with class members. Don’t be startled if one jumps on your back. The goats usually have lots of energy and will definitely be a distraction from your yoga practice and that’s ok! After class is over there is plenty of time to play with baby goats and even feed them a snack.

How do I prepare for Goat Yoga

Since goat yoga is a little different than regular yoga. To have the most sucessful experience, we have a few tips for you:

  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting licked on by the baby goats
  • Expect some accidents to occur in the practice area. In some classes the baby goats will be wearing diapers but not always.
  • Remember to tie back you hair if it’s long. The goats might try to pull on it being playful.
  • Be ready to be overwhelmed with the cuteness of the baby goats.

Are you ready for Goat Yoga?

With the growing popularity of goat yoga with a simple online search you should be able to find a practice near you. My first goat yoga experience was a pop up class at a Winery in New Egypt, New Jersey. These types of classes are extra fun because they combine two fun activities together.

Near my home in Central Florida there is a cute little farm called Wildflower Farms that hosts lots of baby goat activities. If yoga isn’t you thing they also have baby goat happy hour.

Lastly don’t forget you yoga mat and most importantly to make a themed shirt for the occasion!

Baaaah-maste!
